Background to the event

Equality for Us, Inclusion for All 2018 is a chance for young people to explore 3 workshops centred around equality and inclusion, participating in democracy, and the European Youth Goals. We will be looking at what equality is and how it affects young people as individuals, as groups, and the reasons why the fight for equality goes on.

This is the eight Equality for Us event and builds on the success of the 2011-2017 events. The event consists of interactive issue based workshops and plenary sessions. The British Youth Council recognises that some groups are either under-represented or discriminated against in our society. In particular those in BME, Disabled, LGBTQ+ groups, women, and young people of faith. We will also explore how these tie in the Youth Goals developed by the last cycle of the Structured Dialogue on Youth.

Who is invited?

As part of the British Youth Council’s commitment to combat discrimination and to promote an active equal opportunities policy we provide specific opportunities for members of specific groups, so that with targeted support they can work to combat inequality in society. The purpose is to meet together, share experiences and propose ways to support each other and help the British Youth Council as a whole determine its policy and campaigns in these areas.

Therefore, this event is for those young people (11-25) who self-define with one or more of the following groups - as laid out within the British Youth Council Rulebook:

• Young black and ethnic minority people;
• Young disabled people;
• Young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people;
• Young women;
• young people of faith

If you don't belong to any of these groups but would still like to attend, please let us know why attending this event would be valuable for you and for other young people when you register for your tickets. We will then be in contact at a later date regarding additional spaces.

Alongside this and for the first time ever, we will be opening up this event to young people and organisations from outside our membership.

Unfortunately, we can't offer duty of care for young people under the age of 18. Once booking has closed, attendees will be sent consent forms. Those young people under the age of 18 will need parental consent to attend this event and will need to be accompanied by a support worker.

What to expect on the day

In addition to the workshops on the day, there will be a 'marketplace' in the morning for organisations related to the equality and inclusion to talk and share their work with our attendees. There will also be a keynote speaker and a panel debate at the end of the day to recap proceedings.

This is also a free event, however, spaces are very limited and there is usually a waiting list, so make sure you book asap. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.

Once booking has closed on the 8th October, we will be in contact regarding consent forms and duty of care.
